With Digital Mapmaking, Scholars See History

Few battles in history have been more scrutinized than Gettysburg’s three blood-soaked days in July 1863, the turning point in the Civil War. Still, there were questions that all the diaries, official reports and correspondence couldn’t answer precisely. What, for example, could Gen. Robert E. Lee actually see when he issued a series of fateful orders that turned the tide against the Confederate Army nearly 150 years ago?       

Like the crew on the starship Enterprise, humanists are exploring a new frontier of the scholarly universe: space.

Mapping spatial information reveals part of human history that otherwise we couldn’t possibly know,” said Anne Kelly Knowles, a geographer at Middlebury College in Vermont. “It enables you to see patterns and information that are literally invisible.” It adds layers of information to a map that can be added or taken off at will in various combinations; the same location can also be viewed back and forth over time at the click of a mouse.

Today visitors to Gettysburg can climb to the cupola of the Lutheran seminary, where Lee stationed himself on July 2, the second day of fighting; or stand on Seminary Ridge, where the next day Lee watched from behind the Confederate lines as thousands of his men advanced across the open farmland to their deaths in the notorious Pickett’s Charge. But they won’t see what the general saw because the intervening years have altered the topography. Over the decades a quarry, a reservoir, different plants and trees have been added, and elevations have changed as a result of mechanical plowing and erosion.

Geographic Information Systems, known as GIS, allowed Ms. Knowles and her colleagues to recreate a digital version of the original Gettysburg battlefield from historical maps, documented descriptions of troop positions and scenery, and renderings of historic roads, fences, buildings and vegetation. “The only way I knew how to answer the question,” about what Lee saw, Ms. Knowles said, “was to recreate the ground digitally using GIS and then ask the GIS program: What can you see from a certain position on the digital landscape, and what can you not see?”

She said her work helps “make Lee’s dilemma more vivid and personal.” Nineteenth-century military leaders relied primarily on their own eyes, and small differences in elevation were strategically important. “Lee probably could not have possibly seen the massive federal forces building up on the eastern side of the battlefield on Day 2 during the famous attack on Little Round Top,” Ms. Knowles said. “He had to make decisions with really inadequate information.”

So did Lt. Gen. James Longstreet, who was vilified in the Confederacy partly because of his decision on July 2 to take his troops on a long countermarch to avoid detection rather than attack Little Round Top directly. The march “made Longstreet the goat of Gettysburg,” Ms. Knowles said. But there was no way that Longstreet could have seen that Little Round Top was undefended at the time. “The analysis says Longstreet made the best decision he could,” added Ms. Knowles, who is currently working on a digital map of the Nazis’ territorial conquests and forced labor camps in Europe.

New methods of computer-assisted geographic analysis can also offer new interpretations of familiar topics. Geoff Cunfer, a historian at the University of Saskatchewan, revisited causes of the 1930s Dust Bowl by analyzing data from all 208 counties in Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, Oklahoma and Kansas that were affected, an impossible undertaking without this system. He found that the traditional explanation of farmers’ extensively plowing the land without care for environmental limits was only true in some places. Barely plowed Southern counties also suffered from the plague of dust. Using reports of annual precipitation, unplowed grassland, wind direction, droughts, agricultural censuses, historical studies and previous reports on dust storms — “a messy shoebox full of newspaper clippings” — Mr. Cunfer created data sets that could be plotted on maps.

He discovered that dust storms regularly occurred in the 19th century and were a natural part of plains ecology before any plowing occurred, but were “unreported and unpublicized,” he said. ...

Students Use GIS, GPS and Satellite Remote Sensing to Study Environmental Challenges

Carbon footprint" has worked its way into the lexicon of a warming world, but carbon isn't the only gas that can tell us about the health of our changing planet. Nitrogen is another worth tracking, especially when it comes to monitoring pollutants that can adversely affect an ecosystem's soil, water quality, plant growth and biodiversity.

In Joseph Arehart's winning entry into the 2011 Thacher Environmental Research Contest, nitrogen concentrations, as measured in fungal plants called lichens, are analyzed in order to establish baseline pollution levels in Boulder County, Colo. Monitoring changes in the area's "nitrogen footprint" over time can help determine the effectiveness of efforts to mitigate pollution.

The Thacher contest, an annual activity of the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES), awards cash prizes to grades 9-12 students whose projects show the best use of satellites and other geospatial technologies or data to study Earth.

"We believe it's essential to provide an opportunity for, and recognize the exceptional work of, students like Joseph and this year's other winners in the area of environmental research," said IGES President Nancy Colleton. "They will contribute greatly to our future, which is sure to feature increasing environmental challenges."

Arehart, who is from Boulder, earned the competition's first-place prize of $2,000 with his study that combined chemical analysis, the Global Positioning System and geographic information systems (GIS) to visualize how nitrogen concentrations in lichens vary between urban and wilderness settings.

Airplane for Tunisia Aerial Mapping Delivered

The Reims Aviation F406, a twin-turboprop aircraft, is particularly well-suited to light airborne surveillance missions, with integration of the latest generation systems: cartography, the fight against pollution, surveillance of fishing grounds, borders, passenger and freight transport, etc. The F406 can handle many types of missions and is appreciated by operators and pilots for its robustness, ease of operation and its very competitive operating costs.

It is equipped with a Hexagone brand large format DMC® digital camera, a console dedicated to the handling of the camera and a screen to allow the pilot to line up with the axes of the flight plan defined in advance. The DMC digital system will replace the film-based photography equipment that has been used until now. Substantial technical support for the aerial photography is provided. It is based on test flights, image processing, and aerial triangulation. It is important to point out that there is also a very substantial training program that accompanies this technical support. Ten or so people from the Office de Topographie et de Cartographie of Tunisia (OTC) will receive 3 weeks of initial training at the El-Aouina air base in Tunis. The cycle will be supplemented by advanced training in France, and then again in Tunisia. IGN France International will be in charge of it.

Des solutions Hi-Tech pour la planification urbaine

Toutes les grandes villes sont confrontées à des problèmes identiques : quels sont les meilleurs moyens pour réduire l'étalement urbain, revitaliser les quartiers vieillissants et créer des communautés durables ? Les problèmes liés à la ville sont complexes pour les chargés de la planification, et souvent frustrants pour les résidents qui pensent que leurs propositions ne sont pas suffisamment prises en compte.

La solution pourrait être de mettre en place une plateforme interactive sur le web de manière à simplifier le processus de planification urbaine, à améliorer la visualisation de différents scénarios et à prédire les résultats de ces décisions. Des ingénieurs et des experts en design urbain de l'Université de Calgary (Alberta) développent actuellement ce système, appelé " PlanYourPlace ", le premier du genre au Canada. "Nous avons pour but de développer un outil simple et interactif qui peut être utilisé à l'échelle régionale comme à une échelle locale (quartiers)", dit le Dr. Andrew Hunter [1]. "Ceci est possible grâce à de récentes avancées technologiques dans les systèmes d'informations géographiques (GIS) et dans les infrastructures informatiques."

Le projet "PlanYourPlace" comprend le développement de logiciels permettant à la fois la visualisation des différentes propositions et l'esquisse des solutions de rechange. L'ensemble inclura des composantes géo spatiales telles que l'imagerie et la cartographie associées à des algorithmes générant les résultats issus de différents scénarios. Le résultat final sera un outil de planification pouvant être utilisé partout. "Notre objectif est d'améliorer les pratiques de planification et de promouvoir les approches interactives et participatives, qui mènent à un développement durable d'un point de vue économique, environnemental, social et culturel", explique Bev Sandalack , chef de recherche à la Faculté de design urbain environnemental de l'Université de Calgary. "Ce système aidera les utilisateurs à comprendre plus clairement les implications et les bénéfices de ces objectifs de planification et de développement, et à participer de manière plus significative." ...

Google Maps bientôt plus utilisé sur les mobiles que sur les PC

La recherche d'informations locales, Google Maps et la navigation mobile sont en forte croissance chez Google.

Lors de la conférence TechCrunch Disrupt, Marissa Mayer, la vice-présidente de Google chargée de la localisation et des services locaux, a éclairé le développement de la recherche locale et de l’Internet mobile de quelques chiffres édifiants.

Elle expliquait lors d’une interview après l’évènement que Google « a toujours été très concentré sur le local et sur Maps. Ils ont une énorme croissance« .

Ainsi, les applications Google Maps pour les smartphones dépassent désormais les 200 millions d’utilisateurs actifs. Ils représentent 40% du total des utilisateurs de Maps, et devraient former la majorité dès le mois de juin 2011.

De plus, sur Google, 20% des recherches concernent des informations locales. Depuis un mobile, la proportion monte logiquement, pour atteindre 40%.

Afin de monétiser ces recherches, Google veut rendre plus simple l’utilisation d’AdWords par les TPE et PME. ...

Les données de localisation assimilées à des informations personnelles en Europe

On apprend dans l'article que "Suite aux affaires Google et Apple, la Commission européenne pourrait inscrire l'encadrement de l'utilisation des données de localisation dans une prochaine directive."


" Les données de géolocalisation sont-elles des données personnelles? Pour la Cnil (Commission nationale de l’informatique et des libertés) en France et ses homologues européennes, la réponse ne fait pas de doute. Les informations permettant aux utilisateurs de se repérer sur une carte font partie des données privées, rapporte le Wall Steet Journal qui s’appuie sur un avis qui doit être publié dans les prochains jours. ..."

 

" Cela impliquerait que, comme pour les informations nominales et les coordonnées, les prestataires de services de localisation tels que les géants Google, Apple ou Microsoft, seraient obligés de demander explicitement aux utilisateur l’autorisation d’exploiter les données géographiques fournies par leurs smartphones."


" Par ricochet, les solutions d’analyse comportementale des services marketing et les réseaux sociaux pourraient également être soumis à cette obligation de soumission sur le territoire européen.  ..."

Mobilisation cartographique autour du séisme de Sendai

"Les acteurs de l’information géographique se sont mobilisés très rapidement autour du séisme de Sendai qui a affecté le Japon le 11 mars dernier. La charte internationale espace et catastrophes majeures a été déclenchée, acteurs privés, institutionnels et associatifs ont mis leurs moyens à disposition pour cartographier les nombreuses conséquences de l’événement : localisation des messages de recherche de disparus, évaluation des dégâts, animation pour présenter le séisme et le tsunami, gros plans sur la centrale nucléaire de Fukushima… "
Il s'agit d'un exemple éloquent de l'importance de la télédétection et des SIG pour la gestion des risques.
