In Which Direction Do They Spin?
Michael caught a remarkable show on National Geographic the other day, featuring some of the most interesting optical illusions of our time. Most of them we have already featuredon this site. One of the featured illusions that made him scratch his head were thespinning balls you can see in this animation below. This is how it works: both of the outer rims (made from spinning balls) rotate in counter-clockwise direction. But if you try and focus on one of the central dots (i.e. yellow one), the outer rim of another will seem to spin in opposite direction! This works vice-versa. To put it short – concentrating on the yellow ball will make it seem that the balls on the left are turning in opposite direction, while in fact they aren’t! Strange isn’t it?

Trippy Mandala Optical Illusion
Here’s something that started popping out all over the net lately. Below optical illusion animationtakes some time to fully load (2MB #gif file), but when it does, all you have to do is blink fast and repeatedly – and when you do, beautiful mandalas shall emerge!
If you never heard of it, Mandala is a Sanskrit word meaning circle. They have a spiritual and ritual significance, representing the universe in Hinduism and Buddhism.

Illusions optiques et explications
- Même si elle semble se déplacer. Ce-ci a été trouvé à Mighty Optical Illusions, où l'explication donnée était que cela a quelque chose à voir avec les " microsaccades."
La même explication a été donnée dans le Discover Magazine pour l'image suivante :
Comme vous pouvez le remarquerez, les cercles semblent tourner en réponse à l'endroit où vous regardez l'illusion. Macknik et ses collègues ont suivi le mouvement des yeux des gens quand ils regardaient à deux de ces roues sur un écran d'ordinateur. Leurs sujets avaient gardé un doigt appuyé sur un bouton, le soulevant chaque fois qu'ils semblaient voir le mouvement des roues.
Macnick et ses collègues ont constaté une corrélation étroite entre le début de l'illusion et une sorte de mouvement involontaire que font nos yeux, appelés "microsaccades", qui nous aident à compenser une propriété particulière de l'œil: si nous regardons un objet trop longtemps, les signaux que chaque photorécepteur envoie au cerveau deviennent plus faibles. Les microsaccades actualisent les photorécepteurs avec une entrée différente et apportent un nouveau souffle à notre perception.

Cette illusion d’optique va vous faire douter
C’est dingue ! D’abord, parce que les spirales rendent dingue, c’est connu. Ensuite, c’est dingue parce que cette illusion va vous rappeler à quel point votre perception des couleurs est relative. Croyez-le ou non : les spirales vertes et bleues que vous voyez sont de la même couleur.
J’avais du mal à le croire aussi. Mais si vous vérifiez les couleurs dans Photoshop, vous aurez les mêmes valeurs : rouge 0, vert 255, bleu 150. Comment est-ce possible ?
La raison pour laquelle nous percevons une couleur différemment est son environnement. En bref, les couleurs qui entourent une autre couleur vont modifier la couleur. Chaque œil a 6 à 7 millions de cônes, qui sont concentrés dans un point jaune central qui s’appelle la macula. Ces cônes mesurent la couleur dans différentes longueurs d’ondes qui se chevauchent pour certaines d’elles. Notre cerveau compare ensuite ces signaux de manière antagoniste, comparant les différences de longueur d’onde entre elles. Quand certaines couleurs sont associées, le cerveau ne peut pas analyser correctement les infos des cônes et nous sommes alors dupés par nous-mêmes. [gsu and Techi]

Que se passe-t-il dans notre cerveau lorsque nous sommes face à une illusion d’optique ?
