According to satellites May was a warm month globally

As I have reported here before, May was 4 degrees below normal in terms of the high temperature average for both coastal and interior sections of SLO county. That is a very local thing, globally May was a very warm month.
NOAA sponsors climate monitoring, and their Remote Sensing Systems Program (satellites) released May data showing May 2011 was .126 degrees celsius above normal globally (for the lower atmosphere) making it the 11th warmest May in the satellite record going back to 1979.

The overall longer term global temperature trend for the lower troposphere in the RSS analysis is at +.143 C per decade.
